What these results mean

Your IP address is the address the internet replies to. It belongs to your connection, not your device, and everyone in your household usually shares the same one. Sites you visit see it automatically.

Region and city are estimates. They describe where your provider's network equipment is registered or routed, not where you are sitting. Treat the city as a rough indication and the country as reliable.

ISP and ASN identify the network operating your connection. The ASN (for example AS5089) is the autonomous system number, a stable identifier for that network, and it is usually more informative than the trading name beside it.

Connection tells you how your address is classified: residential, mobile, datacentre or hosting, or a VPN, proxy or Tor exit. If you are on a VPN and this says residential, the provider's address has not been catalogued as a VPN — that is a point in its favour.

Where this data comes from

The city, region, postcode area, timezone and coordinates come from Cloudflare's edge geolocation, which sits in front of this site and passes them to our server as request headers. The network and organisation details come from IPinfo Lite. The VPN, proxy, Tor and datacentre flags come from ipapi.is.

All three are queried when you load the page, for your address only. We keep no history of your lookups and there is no account. Our privacy policy lists every provider involved and what each one receives.

How accurate is it?

We measured this rather than guessing. We took 15 IP addresses and looked each one up in three independent geolocation providers on the same afternoon. All three agreed on the country every time — 15 out of 15. They agreed on the exact city name only 3 times out of 15, and on four addresses they placed the same IP more than 100 km apart. The worst disagreement was 3,859 km.

That is disagreement between providers, which is a floor on the error rather than a measure of accuracy: where two providers are 1,000 km apart, at least one is wrong by 500 km. The full method, the raw numbers and the caveats are in how accurate is IP geolocation.

Why your location might look wrong

You are on a VPN or proxy. Then the location shown is the server's, which is the point. Our VPN leak test checks whether your real address is escaping anyway.

Your ISP uses carrier-grade NAT. Your public address is shared with many other customers and may be anchored far from you. Common on mobile and increasingly on fixed lines — see our CGNAT guide.

You are on mobile data. Mobile networks route through a small number of gateways, so the reported city is often the gateway's, tens or hundreds of kilometres away.

The address block is registered elsewhere. Databases fall back to the address on the allocation record, which is frequently a head office. In our experiment this put a Shanghai university address in Beijing, 1,080 km away.

To see what a site can work out about you beyond the IP itself, try what websites see or the browser privacy analyser.

Why Knowing Your IP Matters

Every device on the internet has a unique IP address — a digital home address that routes information correctly.

Checking your IP helps confirm your VPN status, troubleshoot issues, and understand your online footprint.
